I don't know if there is a standard, but I like to use 518 just about anyplace I can. Usually, I'll use it with the original gaskets, but sometimes not, such as in the case of the oil filter adapter. There's no need there for a gasket, the 518 fills all the nooks and crannies, is easy to clean up after, and it is less of a pain to install the adapter without the gasket.
I even use 518 - sparingly - to hold the valve cover o-rings in place while installing the VC with a new pair of o-rings.
Definitley don't use it on a head gasket.
I think it's fine on the inlet manifold. What I do is coat the entire paper surface with 518, then lay a very small bead down, for final sealing. With the 518, paper gaskets don't stick to the metal, and so are a LOT easier to clean off when next you need to do the job.
YMMV...
