but wouldn't his battery light have gone on and stayed on if that's the case?
they may have buggered up the connections at the back of the alternator but its first helpful to know if you have fully charged battery, if the alt light comes on when you turn on the ignition and goes off once the engine is running.
Here's a little something some of you might find interesting.
The ground wire to the alternator breaks over time and is not noticeable to the naked eye (or fully clothed one either).
I was experiencing difficulties in my charging system - long cranks, hard starts etc and then put an extra ground wire from the alt casing to the engine block - 12 gauge will do the trick. Alt light goes out quickly and battery gets a full charge.
Unlike most alts the saab alts are insulated with rubber bushings and they need PROPER grounding.
Good preventative maintenance for older SAABS
Grounds and electrical issues are our number one problem!
