When it's broke Posted by Cmyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: When is a bad transmission a bad transmission, Patton, Fri, 16 Apr 2010 11:36:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Patton,
You'd actually be better off if the car didn't move at all. That can result from low ATF level and other relatively minor causes. The fact that it moves a bit and then stops is classic evidence of broken "hard parts" (internal components), typically gears, usually the final drive gears. A very common termination of these C900 automatic transaxles results from allowing the differential section of the unit to lose all of it's lubricant, usually through a leaking inner driver oil seal. That section runs in motor or gear oil and is partitioned off from the transmission section which runs in ATF. Owners check their ATF and think all is cool but the differential is running dry and eventually the gears burn and shed teeth. That makes the car able to move a bit until the gears have rotated to where their broken section(s) coincide at which point the car stops moving and usually locks up. Don't let anyone tell that you can just replace or repair the broken differential, that's impossible on the Saab C900. The entire transaxle must come out and be replaced or repaired and that is a big, expensive job which if done poorly will have to be done again$$$$$. It may be that components inside the transaxle other than the final drive gears are causing the problem but that is no less of a repair job. You could raise the car and remove the final drive cover (on the rear end of the transaxle) and look inside at the gears to confirm or refute this suggestion. That's the most common condition with the symptoms you've described. Good luck.
