Clutch woes

As some of you may recall, I had issues after replacing my clutch last Fall. I just put the car back on the road, and now it's time to face the music again.
I had a bad slave, which I replaced. While I had things apart, I did a new main seal and a new clutch disc. After the job was done, I had grinding in second gear that I didn't have before the job. The car only has 87K on it, so I don't think the 2nd gear synchro is bad. I bled and rebled the system, no improvement. I checked the alignment of the shifter, no improvement. I put in a new dogbone, no improvement. Checked the motor mounts, all OK. All other gears shift flawlessly.
When I first started the car this year, I had a mild squeeking/squeeling coming from the clutch area. It comes and goes.
Now my question; was I supposed to lube the clutch shaft before reassembly? Is the clutch disc supposed to slide a bit on the shaft to disengage? This 2nd gear issue makes the car no fun to drive at all.
