First, I'm not an A/C tech, nor do I understand much about how it works. But - my '90 SPG & my '90 TC both have nice working Air Conditioning. So, here is my uneducated $ .02 worth. From what I've seen, the most common failure that allows the R12 (or R134) to escape is the "blow-off" valve added to the compressor in '90. It's that 13mm brass-colored thing by the valves on the end of the compressor. My '90 convertible had zero A/C when I bought it. It was still R12 equipped. I checked to see if the compressor ran by removing 2 wires from the receiver-dryer, and shorting them together briefly. Yup, it worked! Then I bought a kit of Enviro-Safe R12A Refrigerant - About $47 including shipping. Nice kit, with R12A coolant, dye, oil, stop-leak, valve adaptors, gage setup and thermometer. I replaced the "blow-off" valve and used the kit. It made the A/C blow cold (42 degrees) at the center vent! That was late last summer. It is still working the same this year. So that cost me $50 and a $5 junk yard part. My '90 SPG (bought it in 2002) was taken to an A/C & radiator shop, where they know what they're doing. It needed a "blow-off" valve and some expensive R12. Cost me $197 and a $5 junkyard part. The economics and rate of success are pretty compelling - $257 for 2 cars, both work great, no R134 conversions. Incidentally, I think converting to R134 is a waste of effort, unless the problem is repaired/treated. I don't think it's the solution. I believe the Enviro-Safe R12A is compatible with R134, also. No need to evacuate and so on. My 2 cents worth.
