I have a nice used 87 eq. I had it in my car long enough to verify that it lights up as it should and all 4 channels on the amp work. I'll swap it with you for an 88 eq that you already have wired to work with an aftermarket radio.
The 86-87 eq is very different from the 88 one. It includes the amp for the radio, and uses 2 cables rather than 1. A common failure on them is something comes loose where the cables meet the circuit board and 1 or more of the amps channels stop working. On 86-87 models without the eq, the back of the single din storage box was the amp. The head unit had no amp, and neither did its cage like the later radios.
My 92 900 uses the later CD/EQ. That is the most complicated setup of all. The headunit has an amp for the front speakers, but the rear speakers are powered by an amp under the rear seat. The eq/cd player uses 2 cables similar but not compatible with the 86/87 cables eq cables. It looks and sounds good, but was hard to round up all of the parts. It was optional in 92-93 900's. There aren't that many out there.
