you really should check and clean (and replace-fix those wires if they don't have trustful look) all the ground points. It'll be long story to tell (or to post, to type) so spending $50 for a copy of Bentley manual is really worth it. Bentley is a good universal guide, if you're lucky to find factory Electical System Manual, then buy it immediately.
Even if we take that fan - even if it's short-curcuited then it'll blow the fuse but it will not by any means 'overload' your alternator. Most of the troubles you described happen cause of bad ground connections.
