What you describe does fit with a bad inner driver/tripod assembly. They typically cause vibration upon acceleration only. Diagnosis can often be confirmed by rolling back the boot and feeling inside the driver with one finger (by someone who knows what to feel for) and also by seeing how much rotational freeplay exists between the inner driver and axle shaft. The picture shows a worn driver and a tripod with all the needles missing from one roller (and some rust in the grease). (This transaxle is out of the car for other reasons. Inner driver/tripod repair is easily done with the unit in the car.) It can difficult to discern which inner driver is defective simply by driving the car so if the one that you suspect checks out OK be sure to check the other. A tire out of balance will always cause a vibration at a specific, constant road speed and tires that are 50% worn or more usually can not be effectively balanced.


Dash illumination bulbs do burn out but are easily replaced through the speaker port on top the dashboard. How much DIY are you up for, if any? If there is a reputable Saab independent in your area you should definitely make friends there for a number of reasons.
