I thought 86' base model had solid rotors, whereas the S & Turbos got vented. If so (though I've been wrong before), AND you've got a set of pads specifically manufactured for the solid rotor applications (more/thicker friction material)...it'd be a tight fit indeed. However.......I'm pretty sure the pads I just referenced are nearly extinct nowadays & all pre-88' offerings are simply the thinner pads for the more predominant vented set up. The thinner variant fits both vented & non vented...so less inventory for suppliers....& unfortunately, less pad life for us solid rotor Saabers.
Everyone has their preference, but I've found the red Park bicycle spanner is a great tool for turning the direct piston in.
Btw, Axis (Repco) metal master front pads (pre-88') can be had for a bit over $6 thru europartsdirect. A lot of Saab staple parts are cheap(er) there...but allow a solid (pun intended) week for shipping (free aft the std $50 threshold I think).
