Saabers.
Simply wished to share an experience over the weekend. Let us commence from the begining:
Driving along, last Saturday: minding my own affairs. Gradually, the vehicle begins to run rough: like it is missing, or not firing correctly.
I was thinking: vaccumm leak, yet the roughness of the engine increased, and I had to blip the throttle to prevent the engine from cutting off.
The speakers emitted a static grumble at the same time. It is then I notice the fuel light which was illuminated glow dimmer. I realised it is my charging system.. Head home now!
I begin to race home, the engine running rough, hesistating. Alas it cut off on me three long blocks away from home.
To make a long story short, I changed the battery, terminals, yet the same thing. I then begin to think logically. It can't be the battery for it is the charging system.
Early this morning, remove the voltage regulator from the rear of the alternator, and the brushes are about two and a half mili meters! I march off proudly and releived that I discovered the problem. I went to to the garage thinking to myself, how great it is that I know these 900s so well: and how advantageous to have an spare parts. As I go through alternators, first one brush about 4 mm, hmm...no good. I then pick another with a sezied pulley, and great, the unit looks new: nice long brushes. I smile. After winding a thin bare wire to hold the brush in, I screw the unit back, connect everything: and fire up.
Drop my voltmeter in, 13.5 volts. I feel great.
I get back into the cockpit, and now see the voltmeter at 12volts! What??
then slowly it begins to go down... Dumbfounded..
I begin to jiggle negative wire to transmission: tight. I then go to the back of the starter, while monitoring the voltmeter. jiggle..nothing still going down...
go in back of the alternator, green/white wire tight, grounds tight.
And then! jiggle the power wire in back of the alternator, voltage jumps to 13.5. Yes! The connection was extremely tight, yet the wire was corroded to the terminal: yet because of the insulation, it was hard to see. I then grab a replacement, and all is well! Yes!
Check those wires for corrosion. Where has time gone? the C900s are becoming real classics, evident by restorations/ and corroded terminals.
