Thanks, Duane for the comforting words. I hope this pans out, so to speak.
Two questions, though, after cleaning everything to the max, wire brushing the exterior around the crack (which is actually more like 12mm in length) should I wait 24 hrs or so before putting the drain plug back in?
Or conversely, should I re-fit the drain plug before the JB weld hardens up, since maybe torquing in back in --even with a compressible gasket-- will tend to split the epoxied crack back open again after the JB weld sets up? (The threads on the pan and the plug are fine.) And if so, should I goop up the interior, the plug threads, the seating surfaces, the gasket, everything which JB weld and just face up that from here on I'll have to use a siphon pump for oil changes??
Wish me luck! When I was about nineteen (47 years ago!) I sold a friend an old Chevvy truck with a cracked engine block which I didn't tell him about. I lost a good friend (rightfully so!) and ever since regarded that as once of the cheesiest, greediest things I ever did. So maybe this a small touch of due karma?
