Car on fire (almost)- (long)

On the way to Albuquerque from Phoenix my 91 SPG first starting smoking on the way up some very steep hills in hot weather (111F). I pulled over and popped the hood, the smoking had stopped and everything seemed ok.
I surmised (somewhat disbelievingly) that perhaps some spilled oil or other fluid residue had burned off one of the many now very hot surfaces. I got back on the road. About 30 minutes later the AC gave out, I didnt think much of it since its been finicky for some time, then about an hour and half later (outside Winslow) a pop and then heavy smoke from the engine that filled the cabin as well. Pulled over on a luckily very wide shoulder and popped the hood again, to find the AC belt literally melting into the compressor pulley. I waited for a moment trying to think of how to get the belt off sans tools then went around the car and noticed the AC belt had completely melted through. I yanked it out and waited for a moment to see if anything else looked wrong. Then proceeded to drive the care in to ABQ without incident.
The trucker that saw me pull over in a smoke filled car was amazed as I passed him a few minutes later.
My best guess at this point is that the bearings in the compressor wore out and made things very hot until...
I see Compressor R&R searches in my future, but as I replay these events in my head I'm not sure what I would/could have done differently. Was a finicky AC the clue that I should have taken to heart?
