....without removing the transaxle. Both are simple mods for most Diy'ers & both can be done at the same time after removal of the dipstick cover. To help correct the 2nd gear pop out (under acceleration I assume);

Drain out most of the trans oil (or all of it...good time to flush/refill with fresh 10w/30 or switch to Redline or BG) & pull the dipstick cover. Remove the shift detent spring at the top left & the large ball bearing behind it (should roll out...otherwise use a small telescoping magnet). Keep your wits about you so neither item falls into the trans case...which would be bad. Go find another ball bearing like the original & put them into the hole one atop the other, replace the spring. Alternatively, maybe preferably, skip the extra bearing & instead get a bolt w/a shaft diameter which fits nicely into the spring...the head of the bolt should be between 1/4"-3/8" depending on how bad the 2nd gear pop out is. Cut the shaft of the bolt down to 1/2" or so & stick it in the end of the spring that presses against the dipstick cover....button it up. You're effectively adding spring preload & increasing pressure on the ball...which helps keep the car in gear. This could also have the unfortunate side effect of making gear changes more difficult...but it's a worthwhile risk & easily reversed.

Oh, REVERSE...the mod for this on http://www.townsendinports.com (http://townsendimports.com/Web/transmission_folder/reverse_gear_mod.htm) - it entails a bit more effort, but the instructions are clear. Lots of good tips on that site.
