That swap should be easy.
The "L" means it is the 16v, turbocharged, intercooled motor.
The 1988 has LH 2.2 injections, while the 1992 will have LH 2.4 injection. THe bits and pieces are NOT compatible. But, all you need to do is swap over the injectors, AIC valve, temp sensors, etc from your 1988 over onto the 1992 motor, and it'll all work.
THere is one other difference, which you may not care about. The "shift up" light system is external to the LH on the LH 2.2 car, but internal to the LH on the LH 2.4. If you're swapping the whole motor & trans package, the trans with the 1992 motor won't have the switch that goes in the side cover at the front of the trans for the shift up system.
If you wanted, you could go over to the LH 2.4 in your 1988, but that's a slightly longer story...
