Make sure the pump is running. Fold the back seat, and listen for teh buzz as you turn the key on.
8V (base model) or 16V (900S)? I can't recall if they were all getting the two-pump setup or not by then. The two pump setup puts the main pump in a small plastic bucket inside the tank. There is then a small electric pump that feeds the bucket, keeping it full of fuel.
The car will run with a full tank and a good main pump, but not with a low tank and a bad feed pump, and never with a bad main pump.
She may have burned out the feed pump, and if you do that, then it takes about 1/2 of a tank (8-10 gallons) to fill the tank high enough that the main pump can pick up fuel, as the bucket floods from the higher level of fuel.
The bucket is there to prevent the engine from starving of fuel in turns as the fuel goes away from the pickup.
Years ago I replaced the feed pump in one of my cars (see the link below, and the pic). Later, I transplanted that assembly into my 1986 CV, when it displayed the same symptoms.
