top column bearing replacement (long) Posted by walt [Email] (#2707) [Profile/Gallery] (more from walt) on Thu, 5 Aug 2010 11:28:13 In Reply to: 2 subjects;horn button & replace of steer column bearin, SaabStalker.aka.FMyers, Thu, 5 Aug 2010 08:45:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Disconnect the battery for about an hour before removing the SRS airbag. Remove the kick panel that goes underneath dashboard. Turn the steering wheel so straight ahead. Disconnect horn and clockspring connectors. Remove locknut and washer and try to pull steering wheel off column. Feed clockspring and horn wires through wheel as withdrawing wheel. Tape clock spring halves. Remove other end of clockspring and horn connectors. I had difficulty removing steering wheel off its splines, so drilled two holes in alloy wheel and tapped with 6x1 tap. Then used long bolts and a small steering wheel puller to remove wheel. Remove two lower screws holding turn signal and wiper/washer stalks bracket from steering column. Remove top end of universal joint at bottom of steering column from column. This should allow column to slide in bottom rubber bushing. Using two screwdrivers inserted through column cage, push column up beneath the sliding tube which should pop out top bearing. If you push shaft at the bottom where universal was separated, the shaft may collapse, and you'll have to pull it back out. Rubber inner and outer top bearing cushions may also need to be replaced. While airbag is out, store it with metal part facing down. Also touch car body to discharge any static electricity before picking it up. Don't forget to remove tape from clockspring when re-installing wheel. Also be careful not to jam and break turn signal pawl when re-installing wheel. Dealer should have horn buttons and the plastic bases they clip onto and break. To change the whole column, there are four bolts that hold it onto the car body with a spacer washer on each one between the column cage and the body.
