buckmath,
The end of the cable housing has a plastic fitting which has an o'ring and is slotted near the end so that it is pushed into and then locks in the hole in the case. To extract the cable you are supposed to compress the tip of the fitting with a small socket or tube while pushing it out of the case from the inside. Works great with a nice new cable, on old, brittle cables the little locks at the tip just break off. Yours is probably leaking because the entire end of the fitting has sheared outward of the o'ring. That was always the most common reason I replaced those cables. You'll have to remove the front pan to access the end of the cable and the plastic fitting but the only quick fix will be to replace the entire cable which costs about $120!!! A used one will last a lunchtime by the way (if you find one that aint broke). Someone with a lathe should duplicate the plastic Fitting in steel and then make a replacement lug for the end of the cable (cause I think you'll have to cut it off to R&R the fitting). OR... there may be a motorcycle cable fitting that could take the place of the plastic one. All you need is a shouldered, threaded tube with two nuts to lock it to the case and a drop of RTV to seal it. Fin
