Its been a couple of years, but I'll try my best:
The .250" should be more than enough to inset the spacer. I had purchased the actual Saab spacer tool, but other have done it with wire, bucket handles etc.
From what I remember, I used a bolt from another part of the project. Maybe a bolt from the plastic cover or from some disassembly of the plumbing. The bolt should thread on "normally" so you'll be able to tell if you have the correct size.
Once the shaft is popped, it can be moved as far forward as the radiator. I just let is hang there while I worked. Which brings me to another tip: careful of the radiator as it is possible to "pop" the input shaft out and puncture/damage it.
Remove the hood and it will make your life much easier. This is not too bad of a job once you get into it. I had the most trouble replacing the input shaft seal for some reason.
