Auto -> manual conversion, issue #534: Speedo cable

Transplanting 5 spd from a recently departed '88 900S to a '93 900S whose autobox had failed. Unnoticed by me was the fact that the '93 lacked the retaining clamp at the autotrans where the speedo cable attaches such that I ended up pulling the plastic gears etc from the differential rather than a clean cable disconnect. I have better access now that the motor is out, but still I cannot make the simple cable-only separation of speedo cable from the inner plastic gear assembly. Vise grips on the tabbed metal collar of the inner bits and channel-lock pliers on the cable connector merely spin.
I'm considering two options: chase the donor car to it's resting place in the boneyard and retrieve the speedo cable (relatively easy since dash is mostly apart). A more radical (and somewhat more convenient) option is to torch the plastic remnants of the inner works taken from the defunct auto box, clean it out and hopefully get it to mate with receiver on the 5 spd.
Any thoughts?
