Exhaust manifold removal, 900i

Hallo,
I'm trying to remove the exhaust manifold on a 900i 8v -88. After removing the engine mount I lifted the engine with a jack to get the manifold to come off the studs going into the head. But it only seemed to come about halfway off them. Space seemed really tight.
Is this the correct procedure? Would jacking the engine up too high be a bad idea?
Thanks for any help.
