Frank and Ian,
Well maybe, but all I can say is that the typical presentation of a spent inner driver/tripod assembly is rapid knocking (often called vibration) on acceleration without regard to direction. It will occur going straight or going around a curve, unlike a bad CV which tend to knock only when turning. The thing about worn CVs and inner drivers is that they present without regard for which gear is selected. You'll hear a bad inner driver/tripod whether you are accelerating in first, second, third, fourth or fifth gear and a bad CV when you are turning regardless of speed or gear selection and it will always happen under those conditions, it won't happen and then go away and be fine, broken parts don't heal themselves. Of course there is the occasion that the bad part is making noise but the driver just doesn't hear it and thinks it's gone away.
