While doing some major work on my '92. I rolled in a new chain with the open link feature.

This is what I did.

Bring motor up to timing marks. That grind of just one pin of a link (the pin of the pair that is closest to the intake side). with this pin ground flat to the link pry it apart with a small screwdriver. than take to pliers and turn the side plate upwards.

Now you can open the chain and hook on the new one. Take the pliers again and turn the plate back down. This way the new chain is safely hooked to the old and can be rolled in without loosing it.

The turning of the side plate can be a bit hard but is doable.

Stuff all the head-openings with shop rags to make sure you don't drop anything down there ;-) Just like a surgeon does.

Now roll in the new chain with a helper doing the screwdriver on the flywheel trick while you make sure the chain stays on both sprockets !!
The chain wants to jump of if you build up tension on the chain when rolling it in so be careful.

With the new chain in I attached it and then used following tool.

I bought a light motorcycle chain breaker and rivet tool (just like motionpro sells). I did some small mod's to this tool to make it a SAAB tool.

First I drilled out the 2.9mm hole on one of the anvils to a 3.5 size to help press on the plate. This works far better than using pliers or anything else.

Next comes the rivetting. The standard motorcycle tool has a round rivetting pin which does not work on the solid saab chain pins.

What I did is ground of the rounded tip to make it flat and then grind in a shallow V-cut in the center. This is ideal for flattening the pin ends just like the original. With a dremel like tool this is done in seconds turning your tool in a SAAB specific tool that is worth its weight in gold.

For extra caution I stuck a big magnet to the chain sprocket to help keep anything I might drop (e.g. chain link) stuck to the metal. Which is a good insurance feeling ;-)

Just my experience shared with you all...

Regards,
Emil (The Netherlands)
