You seem to understand the problem.. It's a big one.Removing the fuel line is a whole new world of pain.. and No a hose connection on the high pressure side is, in my mind, just a Time Bomb
IF you have the later plastic check valves as in 9000's then you can use the bits from a new valve to rebuild the old valve.. The end valve bit just pries out. As below remove those plastic valves Very Carefully.. Break one (very easy to do) and it's all over.
Spray the valve where it fits into the housing with WD40 (or whatever) let it soak in then using adjusted to fit channel lock pliers grab the flat tab top part of the valve and pull straight up. Pulling on the part with the fuel line attached WILL break the thing.. every time.
