I've been thinking of going down the same road + need to search for some CMyles posts on this topic... ours shifts cleanly, but shift points are creeping higher + higher (especially 2nd to 3rd gear wont shift until almost 75km/h, 46mph). fluid was changed recently to no avail. disconnected kickdown, little help. iirc, some have recommended dropping the pans + cleaning the governor in this situation.
My question is, is this a risky job: looks pretty easy, removing the governor sounds easy in the bentley... I have new gaskets etc, and realize cleanliness is critical... but is this a touchy sort of project where I am likely to put it back together and have problems afterwards? better to leave alone? I can't imagine driving around town in second all the time is good for it... our Saab indy was uninclined to attempt to clean the governor, but they aren't a transmission shop + aren't overly keen on the automatics anyway. I don't plan to touch the bands.
This is a car we want to keep for a few more years as a winter beater but it's not worth transplanting a stick (due to rust). When the tranny dies, it is done.
James...
