I just did my second one of these (actually, will reinstall the outer sunroof panel tonight, but the inner is back in)... I agree with turbocon86, though I'm not sure how easy or economical it is to obtain separate 1/8 backed material that is an exact match to the 1/4"... the fabric store I bought it from only supplied 1/4". The original sunroof material in the cars was not foam backed.

Of the 2 that I've done, both I used the same 1/4" backed material as the rest of the headliner. The first one (1993) works just fine, no issues. The second (1989) has the fabric rub + bunch up a bit when open because there was slightly less clearance at the back of the sunroof opening (may have something to do with the fact that the car was rolled 15 years ago). I may end up redoing that one someday if it bothers me enough + the car doesn't rust to pieces first...

one other note. if you live in a rust prone part of the country, be prepared to do some rust repair on the outer sunroof panel if you haven't removed it yet! I had to on both cars: stripped all the rubber + metal parts, lots of bondo, rust killing primer, paint, and rustcheck spray... that's why it's not back in the car yet. The 1993 roof looked perfect but was rusting somewhat inside. The 1989 had tiny rust bubbles on the edge of the panel, and was a huge mess inside... water must get trapped in around the rubber seal + settles in the channels for the screws...

good luck!

James...
