If you had three forward gears and reverse prior to making these repairs then you still have those gears the shift mechanism just isn't selecting them. There may be a problem with the control cable. With the pan and filter off you need to watch the manual valve move as someone inside the car shifts the lever through it's entire range. The detent mechanism inside the transmission stops the manual valve at precise locations to direct ATF flow to the appropriate valves and circuits for the range selected. When the transmission is built the detent mechanism is adjusted so that it finds those precise points accurately but it's locked down with two slot-head machine screws and if those screws have been mistakenly loosened then the mechanism must be carefully re-adjusted or the manual valve will stop in bogus locations when the shift lever is moved. You set the detent mechanism by placing the shift lever in neutral and then loosening the two screws and moving the mechanism and manual valve together so that a ring on the valve aligns with a loop on the valve body casting, then tighten the screws.
