It would be a shame to let the bearings disintegrate to the point they might stop the gear from turning. That could waste a good set of rare gears, so I would be thinking about changing out the bearings. How about trying to disconnect the engine mounts, etc and rotate the engine upwards so the front cover is exposed. You might not have to take it all the way out.
I have lots of #7 upper chainwheels I would be glad to trade you :-) ahahhhaahahah
