manual shifter problem

I am having problems with my 1991 SPG. The shifter will not shift into any gear. I came home and went to park the car, tried to put into reverse and it would not go. Tried other gears and could barely move the shifter. I took it apart and found that the gear rod was slightly rotated and moved forward of its normal position. I have a link to a picture of it. What could cause this to happen? Is this a minor problem or a major one? I have had no problems with this until now, the car shifted fine as I drove it home.
Thanks for any help.
