charging / discharging issues

Working on a 1988 900 SIS.
battery light comes on, battery goes flat.
replace the VR, brushes are not completely worn out, but do it,
add a new ground strap because I don't trust the stock setup
battery light on with key on, goes off after start.
charged battery voltage was 12.5 with engine off, 14.1 with engine on.
Case closed...
Three days later...
the battery light comes on again and the battery goes flat...
so I take a used alternator, check the VR and brushes, nearly new,
take to Kragen and have it tested on machine, (they love me there
I bring all my used stuff to have it tested before using again...)
and install, battery 13.1 after being on charger till moments before
with engine off, battery light comes on with engine off, battery light
goes off with with engine start, and the voltage goes to 13.8.
Next day... car starts, driving the headlights get dim, battery flat,
again and car stops. Don't know if the battery light came on or not,
waiting to see the car...
The car does have aftermaket radio installed (date unknown) and it stops
working before the car runs out of battery and stops.
The green/white wire and female spade have been reterminated because I
wanted to rule out a broken wire inside the insulation...
Has anyone experienced something like this? Looking for ideas from
someone that has.
thanks!
