You can get a relatively inexpensive compression tester through Harbour Freight Tools or you may be able to borrow one from Advance Auto Parts. It's pretty simple to test cylinder compression--15 minute job. Instructions should be included with the tester.
To check the torque on the head bolts you'll need a large 1/2" drive torque wrench, a 6"-8" extension, an impact wrench grade 1/2" to 3/8" adapter (won't need this if you can find a 1/2" drive socket) and an E-16 female Torx socket.
The valve cover is held on with 12mm bolts.
Below is a link to instructions for doing a head gasket replacement from the Townsend site. The torquing specs are in there as well as some other pertinent info. Good idea to read the whole thing.
