The problem with ANY used top... Posted by Larry West [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Convertible top question, Ultimated, Wed, 1 Dec 2010 05:06:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
is that the rear "hem" (if you will...), when new, is cut long, stretched, then stapled down to the plastic strip at the front edge of the trunk, and then trimmed flush with the bottom of the staple strip, and the trim strip screwed on. The extra length on a new top lets the installer easily stretch the cloth taut, and staple it.
No matter whether you remove the cover from the frame, or replace the whole frame, you still have to stretch the canvas, and staple that end to the strip, and it is much easier with a new top than it ever will be with a used one.
My first choice would be a new top canvas with a pro installation. I've looked the procedures up and down, and while I'm sure I could do it, I'm also equally sure a pro would make it look a lot better.
Second, I'd take a relatively new top off a scrapped car, but only the canvas.
The major problem with R&Ring the entire mechanism (btw - that's relatively easily done on the NG900...), is that you have to discombobulate the entire rear seat area for access, including the inside trim, and some of that requires moving and/or removing some of the weather seal bits. Those bits are all but unobtanium these days, and even when you do find them, their cost is enough to make you wonder why you didn't have the pro do the job after all!
I'd recommend, if you can't do the new canvas, then carefully remove the canvas from the other car's top mechanism, and install it on yours.
