antenna replacement

Just finished replacing the mast on my '91 900t conv. It went fairly well except for the sleeve not coming out with the antenna. Finally fished all the bits and pieces including the brass base part out of the housing, and got it all back together and it works!!
One problem.. Without adding a rubber O-ring between the 17mm nut and the top-of-the-fender molding, the nut wouldn't tighten enough to hold the molding tight to the fender. I must have lost something. Is there an under-the-molding 'gasket' or perhaps something inside fender on top of the antenna housing that got lost?
