The following was an diagnosis by RayF 2 years ago. This exact thing happened to me today. I heard the noise but was distracted by typical early morning routine and started out, soon died and had to tow home.

Following by RayF 2008
"""Gunk in key switch makes it stiff and it doesn't return from Crank position, starter stays engaged. The oddity with the dash lights-gauges is because the car's still cranking, lights that only come on while cranking stay on. The noise you heard was the starter drive being spun by the engine.
You can get away with this for a short time, a time or two. But it kills the starter. You'll need a new one.
You're advised to clean out the key switch with something, rubbing alcohol, boiling hot water, etc., working key in and out lots of times and turning it too, and then blow it dry (a short length of rubber hose and your lungs can do this).
Your starter may still spin but it will be a high-revving spinning noise, not grabbing the engine and turning that.
You may also have noticed a hot electrical phenolic kind of smell while this was happening or just after.
I have let this happen twice on 900s despite knowing it was possible and even having a pretty good idea of the symptoms. It's hard to pick up on just what's going on till it's too late.
If battery seems strong otherwise, bright lights etc., and if starter doesn't crank even with a jump that's probably your problem. I've shopped for my new starters at the junkyard each time, cheap."""

Anyway this helped me solve the problem I had today and want to thank RayF. Also, while I had it torn down I noticed the water pump bearing was just about to fail. So thanks agian to this invaluable BB, wouldn't have it was ignition stuck in crank position.
