A thrust bearing is different from an oil seal. The oil seal failing is what usually causes a turbo to smoke like hell. The oil seal is just like a piston ring and fits into a channel in the turbine shaft near the rotor. The SD 360 degree seal has an overlap as opposed to just the two ends of the ring butting together so it theoretically seals better. I have one on my T3/T4 hybrid. I think I went with a 360 degree thrust bearing on my last rebuild too, but I'm no expert and couldn't tell you why it's better.
The most important thing to remember is to mark the shaft and the compressor wheel with an alignment mark before you take anything apart. I cut a tiny mark in the end of the shaft with a small triangle file and put a corresponding pencil mark on the compressor wheel. Once I get the wheel off I cut a tiny mark at the edge where the pencil line is (tiny is the important word here). If you use sharpie or paint to mark things, there is a chance you'll wash it off when your cleaning things up. If you don't mark it ahead of time, there's a chance it will be out of balance when you put it back together. You can also forgo the pre-marking and take it to a local diesel truck repair shop that rebuilds turbos and have them balance it for you.
There are some good rebuild tutorials online if you do a search.
