I stopped it on several of my cars. It's my opinion that it's caused by the clutch disc getting stuck on the shaft splines. The grease dries up and all it takes is a little rust on the splines and the disc no longer pulls away from the flywheel when you step on the pedal. When I pulled the clutch, cleaned and lubed(lightly) the shaft splines no more grinding. The reverse linkage mod is a good idea but it's to reverse the damage to the reverse gears caused by the grinding.
