CV Joints/Clocksprings - My solutions Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: $750-$780 in parts for 2 cv joints and a clock spring?, Z, Wed, 29 Dec 2010 03:14:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I bought used ones off Fleabay after having an email exchange with the wrecking yard selling them that essentially guaranteed they'd be tight (if they were too loose, they knew they'd be getting them back). Got both sides for $50 each. I bought new boot kits (with grease), cleaned and re-packed them (pretty much a no-brainer operation, nothing to it - just messy. All said and done, I had very high quality replacements at about $100 each.
For the clockspring, I bought a used one off Fleabay for about $75. The trick is that it can't be wound to tight or too loos when you install it. But that's easy to figure out. First count how many revolutions of the steering wheel it takes to go from center all the way to the right. then count how may revolutions it takes to get all the way to the left (probably about twice what you just counted for the right (duh). That is the extent of the travel of the wheel. Next take the clockspring in your hand and gently tighten it (i think that is to the right), until you just feel tension. Then unwind it the same number of turns it takes to center your steering wheel plus a half turn to a turn and put a piece of tape on it to hold that position before you install it. Essentially, you are simply insuring that the clockspring as sufficient slack so that it doesn't yank its self loose.
