Hatchbacks in the US have always been seen as "lesser" cars than true sedans. In 1981, Saab began building the 4 door sedan, basically by sticking a trunk on the 5 door.
Saab USA decided that the better mix would be the three-door and the 4-door. Part of that decision was to help in limiting the number of potential inventory problems by having too many permutations available. US buyers like to buy off the lot, rather than order, and order times for a Saab would have been lengthy to the US, anyway.
Closer to home, it wasn't as much of a problem offering up all the body styles, which numbered as high as five (CV plus 2,3,4 & 5 doors).
