Loud rapping noise from clutch? when in neutral...

Took my '91 900 Turbo convertible out of its winter hibernation to do some work on it today. Before I put it away for the winter months I noticed that the clutch pedal was a bit soft and low. I replaced the clutch master cylinder last August. Thought it might need to be bled further. When I started the car the clutch was very soft and almost to the floor. The brake fluid reservoir was low and I filled it properly,
pumped the clutch pedal for a bit then refilled the reservoir. I started the car and with it in neutral I released the clutch. The car started making a consistent continual rapping noise. When I depressed the clutch pedal the noise would stop. Let it out it would continue. There is some oil smoking in the engine bay but cant see the source. I traced the oil line from the clutch master cylinder to the slave as best as I could and no issue there. So has anyone ever seen these before? Would like to hear your thoughts on what it could be. Thanks in advance.
