A few points to keep in mind; 1)Make sure that only type F ATF is used to refill, 2)people unfamiliar with these cars will very often screw up the drain and re-fill procedure and wreck something (engine, gearbox or final drive) so seriously consider doing it yourself and 3)if friction elements or thrust bearings in the unit are worn out no amount of ATF management will "cure" it (so it's worth a try but may not help).
The main cause of slipping and erratic shift points, regardless of mileage or any other factor, is low ATF level. Your transmission unit has three drain plugs: A large slotted screw at the front where you drain the ATF, a hex bolt for draining the engine oil and a plug with a 3/8" square socket for draining the final drive (differential).
You should check the final drive while you are under there and that's done by removing the plug on the passenger side(which also has a 3/8" square socket) of the unit, near the back, and ensuring that the lube is up to the hole. It may have either gear oil, which is thick and sulfery smelling, or ordinary moter oil. Be sure to top it off with whichever is already in there (or, better yet, drain and refill it).
