Brake fluid breakdown... Posted by CBS [Email] (#969) [Profile/Gallery] (more from CBS) on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 19:52:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So I had the wifes SUV into National Tire and Battery (NTB) today because I had a mailer coupon for brake service for $50 including pads, inspection, and turning the rotors. Great deal right? Of course they had "never seen this coupon before" and quoted me $700 for pads and rotors. Yes, the rotors were shot (and the pads of course) and I examined them and concurred. [on a side note, I had them inspected last Spring and the pads were worn 25%...so I was amazed that the wife said last week that they were "scraping"]. So I thought OK maybe it's time for pads. Long story short, the pads and rotors are shot, and I will do them myself for $150. But to the meat of this post, the tech asked me what kills brake fluid, and I said "it sucks up moisture" and then said I had been lied to. It is the "heat that destroyed the molecules in brake fluid" and that it "should be changed every 20 thousand miles". I wasn't born yesterday, so I kept my skeptiscism to myself and promptly walked out of there. Any comments? Is the moisture in the brake fluid a myth and it is molecular thermal breakdown that causes brake fluid breakdown? Given the guy was probably trying to sell me a fluid change?
