like the others said... I would add though that, if you are mainly just driving in that heavily populated corridor, you should not have trouble getting the car fixed if you do break down. We try not to take our classics on long trips these days mainly because long trips here can mean stranded in the woods 5 or 6 hours from any source of Saab parts (let alone expertise)!

It really depends on your biases etc. To own a c900 these days really necessitates a little diy (or at least good car knowledge) to keep it up to snuff without it costing a fair bit more than most are willing to bear. We carry a toolkit + bentley in the car just in case, but honestly, once you get the car sorted out mechanically, the number of problems decrease...

wrt to the 04 Aero vert: from what I've heard, especially if it is an automatic, you might be wiser to find a 05 or newer vert. Coming from an '86, the base model 9-3 will be ridiculously fast anyway, so aero vs non-aero might not matter much (I say this if there is a cost issue for the newer Aeros for you)...

in terms of safety. no doubt, the new 9-3 is safer because it is newer and designed to fair better in side impacts (among other things). For what it is, the c900 is a very safe car (as long as it's pretty much free of rust) airbags or no airbags... See the "Saabs save lives" page for many photos of c900s involved in collisions. Insurance company data (based on actual collision payouts) also supports this. That said, I wouldn't want to be in certain types of crashes in any vert (and besides nobody wants to wreck a classic), so drive safely...

James...
