It's difficult to understand exactly what you're describing, but I think you're saying that the shifter mechanism has come loose?? If you remove the rubber shift boot (a.k.a. bellows) by gently pulling up at its base, you can inspect the stamped metal piece that keeps the shifter in place, which is achieved with three screws. If they have somehow come loose, then simply tighten them again.
It also sounds like perhaps the shifter's pivot system, which is plastic on your '85, may have somehow failed?? This portion is directly below the stamped metal piece described in the previous paragraph.
