I've done this several times on different makes with silicone, any color as anything that oozes out at the edges you can wipe away before curing or clean off with a razor blade later.
A good trick to use to hold it in there is, get a couple little chunks of styrofoam from some busted up packaging, and put them as blocks on top of the glass, then tape around the mirror a couple times, over the foam blocks. The foam is good for keeping the pressure on the glass to make sure it sits down in where it should while hardening. You can pull hard on the tape to tension the foam a little as you apply it.
Overnight should do it, at least if not in bitter cold. If you have any doubts you can drive the car with the thing still taped for a day.
Foam is also good cause there's no stickum from tape left behind to clean off the glass, just on the outside of mirror holder.
