The tensioner pushes on the guide about 1.5" down from the tip. That's why I felt OK with keeping the broken guide. If you have worn guides, you may as well pull the motor now while things are half apart. You'll be doing it soon enough anyway.
If you are pulling the motor and replacing gaskets and seals, don't forget to replace alternator bushings as well. It's a lot easier to do that with the motor out. You need two for the mount and two for the tensioner arm. I found it's also easier to remove the whole oil filter housing rather than disconnect and reconnect the oil cooler hoses. Don't forget a new gasket for that. Also get a tube of Permatex 518 Anaerobic sealant. Use that instead of silicone for sealing things like end plates and motor-to-tranny.
I took a couple lengths of chain and wrapped them under the motor to hoist it. You can also use extra heavy duty nylon straps.
My tranny was just steam cleaned and de-gunked. The turbo and exhaust manifold I sand blasted and used POR-15 ceramic manifold paint on.
