My $.02 says that IF you're getting that stutter/power loss only on on-ramps and other inclines, especially below half-a-tank level then Sure, it's probably (hopefully) just your pre-pump. I had that on my '88 900T and replacing the pre-pump and strainer completely solved it and made the main pump quieter at all tank/boost levels for the last couple months.
Then the other day in the process of a clutch job I was reconnecting tubing/wires etc. and that infuriatingly uncooperative and brittle little 3-wire socket that goes into the distributor (Hall sensor I presume) broke off in my fingers. All the contacts are still there but there's not enough plastic to lock them in place. As it happens, foil (HVAC?) tape is surprisingly rigid and robust when used on clean surfaces, so that and a zip-tie hold it together well enough to drive but NOW I get that same sudden occasional fuel loss exclusively proportional to temperature and boost level. I expect a distributor rebuild with its new plug assembly and resulting clean Hall sensor signal to be what solves it this time.
