My clunking was caused by worn drive shaft (passenger side). It eventually wore to the point the car would not move. I replaced the drive shaft. While I was there, I did the other side, upper & lower ball joints and tie rod ends.
All in all, not a bad job. No special tools, good 1/2 drive sockets and breaker bar (and torque amplifier, long piece of pipe) are helpful. Oh, you need the large socket to remove the axle bolt (I think 1 1/4 in worked fine). You'll also need the fork to get the tie rod ends loose or a puller.
Good floor jack also is needed to compress the spring. I've heard of all kinds of things to place under the spring to keep it compressed, I used some old break pads (2) and they work great. Don't forget plenty of anti-seize when you put it all back together. I recommend using a large hose clamp rather then the wire clamp that comes with the axles.
