Check Valve Near Firewall

I've been looking at pictures of engines and noticed that some have a check valve in the vac line near the firewall leading to the vacuum canister in the passenger fender. My 92 only has one check valve which is coming off the valve cover.
I don't know if the previous owner removed it or if it's somehow not needed for lh 2.4. Should this be installed and if so, is there any harm done in not having it? TIA
