So I changed my SRS/airbag steering wheel with a non SRS one. These are just some things I came across that that I thought were worth mentioning.

As others have said, you need to swap the whole column from the u-joint at the rack. I don't recall, however, anyone mentioning that you also need the bracket that holds the indicator and wiper stalks but you do since the SRS one is larger than the non SRS.

The job is pretty straightforward - remove the knee bolster (a job I personally hate for some reason), undo the bolt from the bottom u-joint ** Bentley says to do it from under the car but I think it's easier through the hole behind the pedals. I just moved the steering wheel to a position where I could easily get at it. Remove the indicator and wiper stalk bracket and disconnect them as well as the other wires, cut the zip ties holding the wires to the column, remove the 4 bolts holding the column and shimmy it out.

What you're left with are the wires for the wipers and indicators, the SRS connection which has a red wire and an orange wire and the horn connector which has 2 black wires.

The non SRS steering column has one black wire (ground) that connects to the contact ring. I tested the 2 black wires and they both tested positive for ground so I cut the connector, spliced the wires to each other and connected them to the contact ring by using the connector from the donor car. THIS IS NOT CORRECT AND WILL RESULT IN THE HORN BEING CONTINUOUSLY ON. I'm not exactly sure why though and really don't care now. What I did was put the key in the on position and touch each wire to to column. Whichever one activated the horn is the one I connected to the contact ring.

I guess that's about it. I never removed the steering wheels so I didn't have to worry about centering since the column can only go on one way to allow the bolt to pass through the u-joint. It may have been easier to maneuver the column back on without the steering wheel however since it would make it considerably lighter.

Oh yeah, be sure to clean and lube the u-joints in the non SRS column before you re-install.

Good luck.
