Move the shift shaft to a position it is most accessible to remove the taper pin. Once you get over that hurdle, if you push the shift rod into the gearbox in any gear ( third might be preferable ) then the shift shaft seal has less distance to travel during removal and installation. If you get into third gear, then that is one less step for re rigging the shifter when you reassemble.
Did you get the Saab tools to get the shift seal on and off? It is tight quarters, and you will have to fashion something if you don't have the special tools.
