Motor oil is fine, just change it fairly often.
There are all kinds of horror stories floating around about switching a transmission to MTL late in life. I personally think it's excellent stuff, and wouldn't hesitate, however when switching the first time, you should know a few things:
- It's impossible to remove all the fluid from your transmission without taking the front cover off to drain the quart in the chain case. You must also replace a quart there directly. Oil won't get there by filling the main chamber (until it overflows).
- Prior to MTL You should flush it at least once by doing a full change with motor oil at about 500 miles. I would then put MTL in it, and again, change it at around 500 miles the first time.
The idea here is to flush out any crap the synthetic may have stirred up into suspension that the motor oil had let settle out. Not sure how much of this is based on reality and how much is my own paranoia.
- Clean fluid will immediately improve your shifts. Clean MTL will just feel better for longer than clean motor oil. This is another reason for you to use clean motor oil once before MTL: your own education as to their feel. Saabs like to shift gently. Don't abuse it with your right arm, and for the love of god, don't drop the clutch.
